The Nordic Moot Court on Human Rights
The Nordic Moot Court is a unique opportunity to work closely together with other students and gain in-depth knowledge of relevant questions relating to the European Convention on Human Rights. For example, in 2008, the case dealt with freedom of speech and was based on the Danish cartoons of the prophet Muhammad.
The panel of judges, from the European Court of Human Rights and from the Nordic supreme courts, meet in the Nordic host capital cities in turn. In 2009, the competition will be held in Reykjavik. All travel, board and lodging costs are covered by private sponsors.
A total of 12 teams from Nordic universities will be taking part. Over the past four years, the University of Copenhagen has won two first places, one second place and one third place as well as a number of awards for the best pleadings and procedures.
Practical information
On the basis of applications, and interviews, up to six participants are selected to represent the University of Copenhagen. As a maximum of four participants may conduct the proceedings in the competition, participation does not necessarily mean that you will help conduct the proceedings. However, participants who do not conduct proceedings receive intensive rhetoric guidance and training on an equal footing with the other team members.
The competition is held during the spring semester. The case is published in mid-February and the pleadings must be submitted four weeks later. Preparation for the oral proceedings begins in early May and carries on until the competition ends in the second week of June. The workload is therefore considerable while the pleadings and oral presentations are being prepared.
The proceedings are conducted in Danish, Swedish and Norwegian, and applicants must therefore master at least one of these languages. You are welcome to contact Niels Frostholm, attorney, at nsf@jblaw.dk, if you have any questions.
More details are available on the moot court SIS page (in Danish).
